Q: B12 deficiency following J-pouch surgery - symptoms and treatment?

9 years ago my son had his colon removed and was subsequently diagnosed with Crohn's. He had a J-pouch and was symptom free for 7 years. In the last 18 months he has developed intermittent problems with his eyesight, dizziness, tingling and weakness. His B12 tests have been below normal or very slightly above. His neurologist is pursuing MS, and not considering long-term B12 deficiency, although they have now agreed to give him B12 shots as well as intraveneous steroids. We would like to seek a second opinion from an expert on Crohn's/Jpouch/B12 deficiency. I do not know what speciality would cover this. Please could you advise.

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear of your son's continuing problems. We are not doctors here so can only advise you so much. But, that said, I would think that the best place to start would be with the gastroenterology department at a major medical institution or teaching college. Mayo Clinic comes to the top of my mind. Or, Vanderbilt University, New York Presbyterian Hospital, or Temple University are all considered centers of excellence in gastroenterology. There are most likely more but these are the ones I've heard of previously.

I wish you luck in finding some answers for your son. Finding a very good, well qualified nutritionist may be of help as well.

Best of luck,

Elizabeth
