I've had moderate/severe UC for 2 1/5 years, now pancolitis. I've had several flare-ups and have been hospitalized twice needing intraveneous hydrocortisone, anti-biotics and iron infusions.   I've been treated with predisone (75mg and down for a couple of months at a time) on several occasions. The maintenance drug I take is mesalazine (4mg or 8 tablets per day), (allergic to sulphur so can't take sulphasalazine). Took one course of Imuran but was so violently ill I threw up every five minutes for 2 hours) so that didn't work for me. I also take colifoam rectal foam 2 times per day. My doctor says that I will need surgery if I don't stay in remission this time. It has been proven that as soon as I'm weaned off the prednisone, I'm good for a few months and then UC comes back. Usually triggered by something like antibiotics. So, I'm getting kind of desperate and will exhaust ALL possibilites before surgery.   I've been home from a recent hospital stay for 2 weeks and have added some natural remedies to daily pharmaceutial routine. I take 25g of aloe juice in the morning, 5 grams of l-glutamine 30 minutes before meals, 1 probiotic per day and a metamucil at night and in only a short time, I'm going to the toilet less, have more form to the stools and have ALOT more energy.   Could be a combination of everything, not sure. But I say try it. I'm 38 years old, wear low rise jeans so a colostomy bag just won't do! The only bag I'm carrying with me is a hand bag.   Good luck and please, try everything. Play around with it, change the diet, whatever it takes. If it doesn't work, at least you know you tried.
