Q: Please Help--I've had excess bile and diahrrea for app. 5 mo. Pain is excruciating .

I don't know what has been left in my original question cause I can't preview it. I'm too sick right now to ask much, but I need help desperately. I've had constant diahrrea and bile for over 4 mos. The pain is in my upper and lower stomach and goes into my back. Every BM is full of bile and liquid, runny or soft. I've only had Dec. 09 and then was constipated, but pain never left. I've been on extremely strong pain meds for 9 yrs.due to an accident that wrecked my low back and have chronic muscle spasms n my back, hips and butt. These pain meds don't even touch this problem. It feels like I swallowed acid that lays in my upper stomach and my low stomach pain (cramps) feels like moderate labor. The pain running into my upper back is almost as bad as my lower back. I have colitis, IBS, GERD, diverticulosis, etc., but nothing has ever felt like this before. I've had many problems from these gastris issues in the past, but nothing like this. I had my gallbladder removed 30 years ago and am familiar with bile, but this is ridiculous. Neither my PCP nor new is helping. New G.I. just wants to do endo and colonscopy and won't address bile prob. He didn't even check my stomach to see where pain is or coming from and just wants to make me go thru prep for tests w/out stopping excess bile and controlling diahrrea first. I just can't take any laxatives right now that will result in further stimulation(spasms?) and hemmorrhoids are so swollen and on fire now that I just can't irritate them anymore. PLEASE-can anyone help me? I would be forever grateful.

                                                         Thank You,

Hi Cindy,

I'm sorry you're in such pain. First, we are not doctors or nurses on this site so we cannot diagnose you. But, from what you've said it sounds like you have a bunch of potentially different issues that could be lending to your pain. The back problems can be a problem for people with IBD. And the pain meds. can cause issues for IBDers as well. If you are not getting anywhere with your current/new GI then you need to search for another one that is more on the same page as you. But, that said, the colonoscopy may be the best bet at this point so that they can see what they are dealing with before prescribing more meds that may or may not be proper. If it's a colitis related problem then treatment would go one way. If it's more a back/pain med. issue then different treatment.

You're in a bad cycle right now and somehow you need to break it. The colonoscopy and prep might be it.

Have you tried changing your diet while you've been like this? Eating the BRAT diet? Or being on a low residue diet? Baths with epsom salts are very helpful to hemorrhoids as is coconut oil or Vit E oil applied to toilet tissue to make wiping less hurtful.

I don't mean to be unhelpful. But that's the best advice I can give you. It seems to me you need to do something before you continue to spiral further downwards. If it were me, I'd start doing some research to find a new GI doc today.

Best to you,

Elizabeth
