Q: my 5 yr old girl has rectul and vaginal pain that is sudden and spuratic

I have a 5yr old daughter who has been complaining of rectul and vaginal pain for about 1 yr now. There seems to be no apparent reason for these sharp pains she gets out of nowhere. I have taken her to her PCP numerous times. Usually she is treated for some kind of rash she has developed there like strep or staph but I believe the rashes to be caused because of my daughter's constent touching and scratching of the erea. She will complain of sharp pain, burning and itching to the point of tears even when there is nothing visual at all. She actually calls it the invisible rash. I have been to the dermatologist, G.I. specialist and no one has solved this problem. It has been so bad that I have had to come pick her up from school due her crying and discomfort. Also she does not have pain while urinating or having a bowel moving nor is there any bleeding. Can anyone please help me. I feel so bad for this little girl.

Hi Lost,

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter. If the pain is persisting then I think you need to take her to a different GI doctor than the one you last saw. It can be incumbent upon the parent to seek out a physician who will take the child's problem seriously. However, the problem with children so young is that they have a hard time truly telling us what the problem is so you may have to discuss the pain/symptoms with her when she's not having them so that she's calmer and can possibly give you more information to pass along to either her PCP or a new GI.

Good luck to you,

Elizabeth
