Q: Drug companies have discontinued making hyoscyamine. It is not available in my community.

I have been taking hyoscyamine for many years and at present I have been unable to get this medication locally or online.  I also have fibromyalgia and the spasms that I suffer without the above mentioned medication greatly aggravates this condition.  Please help.  My pharmicist says he has tried several companies and none are shipping at this time.  I tried online and all orders for this medication are suspended for now.  If some companies are still producing this medication who are they and how do I contact them.  Is there another medication that works as well.

Thank you

Hello Eleanor.  I, too, took that almost the same medication - hyoscyamine sulfate.  When I needed to get it refilled, the pharmacist told me the same thing.  What I have now is called Hyomax SR.  I had been taking the hyoscyamine for a long time for irritable and microscopic colitis.  Maybe the pharmacist could locate the Hyomax for you.  I'm sorry that I don't have a company name for you.  Best of luck.

Same thing for me.  I have IBS and that medication was a life saver.  No warning at all.  Just show up for my prescription and *surprise* we don't have any more of that.  Stupid drug companies.  My Dr. has switched me Methscopolomine (sp?).  I still have a couple of days left before I start those so I can't tell you if they work yet or not.  Sorry.

Please don't blame your doctors or the drug companies for the discontinuation of this medication. This FDA ordered the drug companies to stop making the drug because it was an off label use and not approved for IBS. A lawyer for a health insurance company filed a claim with the FDA to stop the marketing/selling of Levsin in order to reduce their costs.

So blame the insurance companies who are making millions but want to save a little more at the expense of your IBS symptoms.
