I have had Iritis,Arthritis and Erythema nodosum as complications of Colitis. I had a total colectomy in May. Does this mean I will no longer suffer from these diseases or can I still have a flare of those despite my colitis being cured?

Hello Sue,
I'm sorry to say I'm not sure. I know colon removal will cure the colitis, since the colon is where the disease is located. But, it's also thought to be an autoimmune disorder which is also what causes arthritis. But, to really find the correct answer to your questions about your other illnesses you need to consult with your doctor(s).
Sorry not to be of any real help, but I'm just not sure.
Elizabeth

Many thanks Elizabeth. I asked,as my specialist said the same as you!-but someone else I know was told that colectomy cured all the associated illnesses as well, which makes no sense to me! My eye specialist told me I would still probably still get Iritis from time to time, usually when run down or very tired,ie times that my colitis was likely to flare. For now I will be content to be rid of the colitis, and the tumour that grew after 20 years of colitis!
