Q: How can I have IBD If I keep constipation , isn't that different than all the other signs?

Everything I've read about IBD,everybody goes to the bathroom very easily, with me I have to take something. I've gone 9 day's no bowel movement. it's terrible, now My Dr. said I have inflamation in my colon, is that the same as IBD? I was so shocked because he told me I had to have part of my colon removed, I couldn't think of anything to ask.I have had 15" of my colon removed before due to Diviticulitus, and I've had lots of polups removed, and family cancer runs high. can anyone help me with this? Thanks so much

Hi Connie,

You've asked this same question a number of times so I'll just answer this one.

There can be many complications with IBD. Have you been definitively diagnosed with IBD - Crohn's or Colitis? It is very common for many people with Crohn's disease to end up having multiple surgeries over their lives where sections of the diseased colon have to be removed to keep the colon from becoming further damaged.

If you have concerns about what your current gastroenterologist is telling you then you owe it to yourself to get a 2nd and possibly a 3rd opion before consenting to further surgery.

Yes, diarrhea is typically the primary symptom for people with IBD but other problems and/or complications could cause constipation - like a bowel obstruction. Inflammation is a typical symptom of IBD, but can also be indicative of other things like IBS - irritable bowel syndrome.

I'm sorry not to be able to give you definitive answers to your problem, but diagnosing individuals is simply beyond the scope of any web site. You must continue to consult further with your current doctor and/or seek a 2nd opion.

The best of luck to you,

Elizabeth
