Q: what to take for constipation

I had surgery now its hard to go to the bathroom I am constipation

Hi Steve,

 

Thank you for your question. There are two types of medication used to treat constipation. One type of medication is a stool softener, which introduces more water into the stool to make it easier to pass. Examples of this type of laxative are Metamucil and Citrucel. The other type of medication is a stimulant laxative, which causes the muscles in the digestive tract to move the contents of the digestive system. Examples of stimulant laxatives include Correctol and Dulcolax. There are also some products that contain a combination stool softener/laxative, such as Peri-Colace. If you experience constipation frequently, you should talk to your doctor as there may be a more serious problem that you should not be self-treating.
