Q: bowel bleeding when on medication

i am on medication->isotretinoin to cure my skin acne. but it seems that i see some blood stains on the tissue after passing motion. i checked on the precription paper and saw that the medicine may cause inflammatory bowel disease (colitis, ileitis haemorrhage) could my medication be the cause of it? is it serious?

Typically blood on toilet paper is more indicative of a hemorrhoid. But, since this new Rx lists IBD as a possible side effect and the blood seems to have coincided with you taking the Rx I would call your doctor immediately.

IBD is very serious and hard to control once it takes hold.

I strongly urge you to call your doctor's office now, and to insist that you get to talk to his or her nurse asap. You don't want to mess around with this if the Rx is causing inflammation in your gut.

Best of luck,

Elizabeth
