Q: Hi Is there any over the counter medication close to donnatal

HI Tiki,

 

Donnatal is Phenobarbital which is in a group of drugs also called barbiturates. Phenobarbital slows the activity of your brain and nervous system which is why is can help some IBD symptoms. As far as I know there are no OTC drugs that mimic Donnatal, but there are other, less serious and potentially habit-forming Rx drugs that might help you like Lomotil - which slows down the GI tract and helps with diarrhea, Bentyl or Levsin which help with abdominal cramps.

 

You really might want to talk about some of these or other options with your doctor.
