Hey Edward,

Our expert Elizabeth Roberts has written a lot of posts on diet and IBD.

You can start here: What to Eat with IBD

Although, foods that do or do not cause symptoms for one person may be different for the next. You may want to consider starting your own elimination diet to pinpoint what foods cause you problems and which are safe to eat.

To learn more about elimination diets read this post from Elizabeth.

If neither of these posts are helpful check out our Crohn's and Colitis Diet page.

Hello,

Laura pointed you to a few of my posts on food for IBD, but if you are in a flare-up the safest foods to eat are what I call "white and light" - bananas, white rice, toast, eggs (poached or scrambled) applesauce, yogurt (natural, no sugar), and baked chicken or white fish.

Hope this and my other blog posts are helpful to you!

Cheers,

Elizabeth

Hi Drue,

I'm sorry you're in pain. I know how awful and debilitating it can be.

For some of us changes in what we eat can help with the pain, but when I was in my worst flare and the pain was unbearable at times I had to turn to Bentyl, a prescription medication that my GI prescribed. I only took it when the pain was severe as it tended to give me a pretty bad headache, but it really helped to take the edge off.

Over the years I've also found rhythmic breathing, meditation, and Reiki to be very helpful for controlling pain of all types, including abdominal pain - there are CDs available to help you with guided meditation. Some people also find that acupunture or acupressure are helpful.

It's probably best to start by talking to the doctor who is treating you for your IBD. Maybe even start to chart your symptoms so that you have a road map to give to the doctor when you see them. It's easy to think we'll remember in a week just how awful we feel today, but it's not always so easy when you only have 10 minutes to get it all out on the table when at the doctor's office.

I hope you can find some relief.

Peace,

Elizabeth
