Q: Hard black bloody stool

Ive been bleeding quiet alot from my back passage for the last 6 ish weeks. Its been red and slimey with blood clots too. My doc as referred me to hospital as blood tests show no infection (appointment not for another 5 weeks tho) and shes given me iron tablets as ive gone anemic. Ive been taking iron for nearly 2 weeks. The last few days my stool as gone really hard, very black and very painful. Whilst having my poo i am getting extreme pain in my stomach which makes me hot and sweaty and i feel like im going to pass out and be sick. Is this normal if taking iron or could my original problem be getting worse??

Hi Samantha,

There is no way for me to know why this is happening. But I would highly recommend that you call your doctor today and discuss these new symptoms. If you can't get through to the doctor ask to talk to her nurse. Losing so much blood so that your anemic sounds like a good reason to get in sooner for some testing than later. Minimally, if it is a reaction to the iron the doctor needs to know so she can make whatever necessary adjustments.

Best of luck to you,

Elizabeth
