Q: What can I eat??????

I started with severe rectal bleeding to the point that a piece of tissue about 3 inches wide and the length of a paper towel came out. Towards the end of my hospital stay

I was advised that the Gastroenterologist could not do a complete Colonoscopy because they were affraid they could perferate my intestinal area. So I was told to wait a month or two to have a complete Colonoscopy. But as far as they could see they found 3 massive bleeding Ulcer's in my Colon and at the same time they advised me that my Diagnosis was Eschemic Colitis or lack of blood flow to the Colon. My Dailey systems include major gas, Diehrea and sometime extreme stomach cramps, more narley pains but

exteme none the less. Is there a Medication for the extreme stomach narley pains?
I heard of one called benzo something or other. So tired of the pain and bathroom!!!!!

Hi Sunshine,

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. I believe the medication you are referring to is Bentyl, or Dicycolime (the generic name) and it can help with abdominal pain and cramps. Levsin is another option you might want to talk to your doctor about.

Regarding what you can eat, whenever I'm in a major ulcerative colitis flare-up I resort to a low-residue, or what I call a *white and light* diet. These are foods that tend to be easy to digest and to so they give your gut a break and a chance to heal. The following foods are what I tend to live on when in a flare-up situation:

- scrambled eggs

- white toast (a small amount of butter only, no jelly or jam)

- white rice (not brown, it's too hard to digest)

- yogurt - as natural as you can get without tons of sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Not Yoplait, etc.

- bananas (not too green or too ripe)

- applesauce (but not apples. The sugars are broken down in applesauce and easy to digest).

- baked chicken breast

- baked white fish

- homemade chicken soup - strain all veggies out before eating.

I have lived on these 9 foods for months at a time while a flare got under control. Sometimes the best tasting meal for me when sick is white rice with a drizzle of olive oil and salt and a baked chicken breast. It would sound terribly boring and bland when I'm feeling well, but when a UC flare hits, this bland diet is the best thing for me.

Hope this helps,

Elizabeth
