Think I may have UC/Chron's

MIM307

One week ago I was awaken to sudden, horrible diarrhea.  After the diarrhea has persisted off and on for several hours, I had several bloody episodes.  The blood was bright red.  I was concerned and called my primary care doc.  She did a rectal exam and stool sample was positive for blood.  At that point we discussed options and possible causes for the blood.  I had recently been away on a business trip and had eaten unusual foods so the possiblity of food poisioning was there.  Nonetheless the blood was concerning so we agreed to wait 7-10 days.  At that time she wants me to do 3 stool samples to be tested for blood.  If they are positive for blood, she will schedule me for a colonoscopy.

A little background on my health: I am 28 years old, female, very healthy.  In addition my dad was recently diagnosed with colon cancer and I have a grandfather with Chron's.

Until the last few days, I was pretty convinced I had UC/Chron's but now that I have not had anymore episodes of diarrhea or blood I'm not so sure.

Any words of advice to help ease my mind would be appreciated.  Its hell waiting until the next testing can be done.

Hi MIM307,

While diarrhea is a symptom of IBD, being awakend by the urge to go is a more typical symptom of IBS or food poisoning. Your doctor is taking what I would consider the right steps in the right order. If the diarrhea and blood have stopped and you have not other symptoms like low-grade fever, achy joints, eczema, weight loss, or lethargy I would, at this time, be too concerned about IBD - these are the symptoms that typically present with an IBD flare up.

See what the stool tests say. You already know you had blood in your stool, so expect the test to tell you that again, but if you have had no more blood since and your BMs are back to normal I just wouldn't be too concerned unless/until your doctor, or new symptoms, give you a reason to feel otherwise.

Cheers,

Elizabeth
