Q: Is abdominal distention a normal side effect of ulcerative colitis?

I am starting to flare up again (I have pan colitis). I have abdominal distention that never seems to fully go away. I look pregnant. Should I be concerned about this?

Hi SW,

Was the abdominal distention a symptom you had when the pan-colitis was diagnosed, or is it a new symptom? If it's new, then I would talk to your GI, or their nurse about it. If it was present as an onset symptom and hasn't gone away with treatment of the pan-colitis then I'd look at other reasons for it. You might ask your doctor to test you for Celiac disease (an allergy to wheat). Even if you come back as negative for that, you may want to try an Elimination diet to see if you are gluten-intolerant, or lactose intolerant, or egg-intolerant. Many food intolernaces can cause bloating. And simply eliminating the offending food can help reduce your symptoms. Problem is, there's no easy way to identify a food intolerance other than to eliminate if from your diet. See my older Shareposts and consider doing an elimination diet.

Best,

Elizabeth
