Q: Hello I have IBD (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

Hello (please respond to me at:   mktgthelove@earthlink.net)

Can you please help me?

9 months ago i went out with some friends and ate at a Cuban Restaurant...hours later I was dry heaving and my internal body temperature rose significantly.

For the next month on and off my symptoms would come and go.  I went to my GP who put me on Nexium and then did stool samples (they all came back negative), did all necessary blood tests, etc.   Yet I was still nauseous 80% of the time and was losing weight rapidly.  I then went to the a gastro, who performed a colons-copy, endoscopy and a capsule endoscopy.   The results:  Gastritis, IBS and tortuous colon.   I am basically vegetarian (I would like to eat chicken and fish again) rarely drink and do not smoke.  My symptoms went away for 3 months but suddenly reappeared last week.  There was no particular "trigger Food" per se, yet I am once again experiencing stomach spasms, nausea and difficulty eating.  I am back on Nexium, Donnatol for spasms and Compazine for nausea when necessary.

I have tried activated charcoal in the past, peppermint oil, tea, etc...many holistic remedies.  Too many to mention.  I have been eating the BRAT diet, and have slowly been trying to incorporate soups, etc...back into my diet.

I have no idea why it has come back and what I need to do to rid myself of it...please assist.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Michael,

I'm sorry to hear of your problems. From what you've described you have been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome - IBS, not IBD, which is Inflammatory Bowel Disease, a much more serious illness that is not caused my food, bacteria, etc.

You may need to get a really good stool test done, by a lab that specializes in this, like Genova labs in N.C. You may also want to get a stool test done for H.Pylori and Candida.

The dry heaving and raised temperature would seem to point toward food poisioning and it is possible that there is a bacteria in your system causing the problems. But, I'm not a doctor and cannot diagnose you.

Good probiotics may be helpful - like Align, Xymogen, etc. Get the refrigerated variety from a reputable health food store and look for strains of Lactobacillus, Bifidus, etc. with at least 5 billion active per capsule. Take 1-2 per day after a meal.

The BRAT diet is useful when in a flare-up situation, but I wonder about the vegetarian diet as fruits and vegetables tend to be very hard on an already angry gut. I'd be more apt to try a low residue diet which tends to include white rice, potatoes, good quality yogurt, eggs, bananas, white bread, etc.

That's about as helpful as I can be with what I know. I hope something is helpful to you.

Best,

Elizabeth

If it is IBS that is causing your symptoms it can be frustrating as it can come and go, there is no one treatment, and it can be frustrating as you're experiencing.
