Want to double check, my daughter will be graduating from high school in 2010. Can she apply for a scholarship for college? I suffer from Crohn's disease since 1979,
Thank you for writing, rleubitz.
Congrats (way in advance!) on your daughter's upcoming graduation. It certainly is smart of you to be looking ahead, and planning financially for collage.
You noted that you were diagnosed with Crohn's disease almost thirty years, and I hope that you are personally doing well at present. I do not know of any scholarships for children of patients with IBD, or Crohn's disease, in particular.
Does your daughter have Crohn's disease, as well? The drug company, UCB (makers of the CD drug, Cimzia) awards $300,000 in academically competitive scholarships each year, to post-high school students who have been diagnosed with Crohn's disease.
UCB offers 30 one-time scholarships, for up to $10,000 each. This opportunity extends to participants diagnosed with Crohn's disease who are seeking an associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degree, or are enrolled in an approved trade school program. (I am very proud to say that my son, Jordan, was one of last year's scholarship winners!)

The Great Comebacks Program (www.greatcomebacks.com/us/programs/index.shtml) gives two different awards:
Ina Brudnick Award - Given in memory of pioneering stoma care nurse Ina Brudnick, this year the program will award $1,000 prizes to four deserving students. Students must be between the ages of 17 and 24, intend to pursue a higher education, and have undergone ostomy surgery and/or have Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.
Comeback KidsTM Awards - Recognizing three young people between the ages of 7 and 17 who, despite having Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or an ostomy, live active productive lives while managing their illness.
According to the sponsors, for the Great Comebacks® and Ina Brudnick awards, anyone who has overcome the difficulties of living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), colorectal cancer, and/or an ostomy and whose story can encourage others. Ina Brudnick applicants must be between 17 to 24 years of age and intend to pursue higher education.
Comeback KidsTM applicants must be between 7 and 17 years of age and have Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or an ostomy/ostomy alternative. Recipients are chosen by the Great Comebacks® Advisory Committee. Applications are now being accepted for the 2009 Great Comebacks® and Ina Brudnick awards. The deadline for the 2009 Award Programs is July 15, 2009. Recipients will be chosen and notified by late September, 2009.
I am not aware of other scholarships specifically targeted for students with ostomies, and unfortunately, I don't come up with any hits when searching for this topic on line. However, United Ostomy Associations of America (UOAA), a national network for bowel and urinary diversion support groups in the United States, has many resource links posted on their web site that may just lead to scholarship opportunities not readily accessed by most people at first pass. See:www.uoaa.org/links.shtml
Good luck!
