Q: I had gastric by-pass surgery 16 years ago. Since that time, I have had on and off bouts of extremely loose stools. It has been quite sometime since I have had a normal BM.What could be the cause?

I have had my gall bladder removed.

Hi Nellie,

Thank you for asking your question. Inflammatory Bowel Disease is an auto-immune disorder that affects the large intestine or the whole GI tract. Do you have IBD - either Crohn's disease or some form of Colitis? If so, then I recommend you talk to your gastroenterologist about your symptoms since your gastric-bypass surgery. If you don't have IBD, then I suggest you discuss this with your main doctor, or the one who did the gastric-bypass.

This is a site devoted to IBD and we just don't have any knowledge on gastric bypass surgery. I'm sorry not to be able to be more helpful, but it is usually best to discuss new or continuing symptoms with your own doctor as they are the experts and know your past health history.

Best of luck to you,

Elizabeth
