Q: I couldn't have a bowel movement for 2 days.

By the end of the 2nd day, I thought if I tried to pass it, I would rip my rectum.  By that time, I was in so much pain from holding it in, I thought I would pass out (laxatives did nothing).  I finally had my husband run to the store and get an enema and after about 6 tries, it finally broke it down somewhat so that I could pass it.  I am scared to death this might happen to me again.  Any ideas on why this happened to me?  I've never been constipated a day in my life...................

Thank you so much on any info you can give me.

Hi Marlo,

Do you have Inflammatory Bowel Disease - IBD? If so, and this is a change in your bowel habits then you should consult with your GI to make sure there are no other complications.

Constipation can be caused by a number of things - OTC or prescription medications can cause constipation, a change in what you are eating or drinking, lack of exercise, the amount of fluids you are drinking could affect things (not enough water in a day can cause constipation in some people), etc.

It's very hard to know "what" causes constipation or diarrhea, for that matter. If you notice any other major changes in your bowel habits or overall health do consult your doctor and discuss these issues with him or her.

A good, natural laxative is prune juice. But if you do have IBD be careful of drinking too much as it can cause diarrhea.

Best of luck,

Elizabeth
