Q: pain and bleeding post colonoscopy and polypectomy

Three weeks ago I had an urgent colonoscopy and polypectomy.

At that time I was told there was also inflammation which would go away.

Since then I have had variable amounts of red blood in stools and a return of the dull ache both of which preceded the colonoscopy

the bleeding varies and at present seems to be less but it is erratic and one day may differ from another

There is previous history of diverticulitis and extensive diverticulosis throughout the ascending transverse and descending colon

Prior to the endoscopy the surgeon had seriously contemplated laparotomy

The return of the dull ache happens at night and especially when moving in bed

although it is nowhere as severe as it was prior to colonoscopy

During the colonoscopy I felt severe brief pain three times

Also there was a serious drop in blood pressure to 89/46

I am wondering what the follow up will entail and hopefully not another colonoscopy

Hi Ann,

There are a number of possibilites, but not being a doctor I can't give you a diagnosis. Your history with diverticulosis and the polypectomy would make it logical that there will be some bleeding post-scope. BUT, if you haven't already, you should call your doctor and talk to his or her nurse to discuss your post-scope symptoms.

Inflammation in the GI tract can also cause bleeding and it could also be indicative of colitis (UC). Have you gotten back the results from your colonoscopy and biopsy? If the inflammation is from UC then it may well take a prescription medication to help bring down the inflammation in the colon.

It sounds to me like a phone call, at least, or better yet a follow-up appointment with your doctor is in order.

Good luck,

Elizabeth
