Constipation in Mother and Child.
I am 33 yrs old and I have been constipated for 10 yrs. It only began after I gave birth to my son(10) who also is severely constipated. We have both been treated with meds and we still we don't have a BM but every 8-12 days. For my son he has been hospitalized 2 for a clean out. I am being referred to a surgeon (I completed Bio-feed back and have tried every med on the market). I did not have this problem until I gave birth, we have ruled out hirschsprung for my son. I don't know if there is a link between my son and myself. Slow transit can be hereditary, yet we both do not respond to prescribed meds, and stool softeners.
Hello Amber,
I'm sorry to say I don't have an answer for you. This site is dedicated to people who have IBD - Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Do you or your son have UC or Crohn's. If so, the constipation is something to be discussing with your GI.
Other things to look at that can contribute to GI disorders could be food allergies or intolerances like to dairy foods, wheat, soy, etc. You might need to talk to a doctor or nutritionist to see if a food or family of foods could be causing your problems.
Best of luck to you both,
Elizabeth

Thank You,
We both are being treated by GI Dr's. They ruled out Crohn's, and several other disease that fall under the same umbrella. I have seen a nutritionist and have eliminated foods groups over a period of time, but no positive results. I am curious about the lasting effects of meds that stop preterm labor, since that was one of the differences in the pregnancy from my others. I also, took insulin, but was told that should not have any effect on our constipation issues now. I also, took meds for group B strep during labor. These were the only differences in this pregnancy. Do you have any advice or know a web site to utilize?
