Question

I feel like I bloat more than usual taking Omega 3 supplements. Is this normal?

Every time I try to take Omega 3 supplements, I feel like I bloat more than usual, so I stop taking them.  I don't get enough fish in my diet, so I know I need the help, but I can't deal with any more bloating than usual.  Is it all in my head?

Thanks,

You may want to read Dr. Eisner's blog from last week about Omega-3s just as an FYI.

My feeling about supplements is this: If you can take them at appropriate strengths without causing any harm or further symptoms then go ahead. But if they cause problems or issues then it's just not worth taking them.

I know that for the first 3 years after my colitis Dx that I wasn't getting enough vitamins into my diet but I also knew that each time I took a multi-vitamin my D got worse. I simply didn't take vitamins for 3 years and then as my gut healed and calmed down started taking certain vits. that were helpful without causing issues.

If you really feel you need the Omega-3 vits. - and there is talk about whether they are really helpful or not, so only you can make that decision - then maybe you need to try different types and doses. Different manufacturers put different things in their vits. There may be something in the one you're taking, other than the omega-3, that isn't agreeing with you. Or, if you like fish, then just broil up some salmon, or other omega-3 appropriate fish, once or twice a week and call it good.

There's no sense making yourself sick or uncomfortable to try to get a supplement into your body - try other options and see what happens.

Good luck,

Elizabeth
