My mother has Crohn's disease and is allergic to sulfa antibiotics. I heard Dr. Edell talking about a certain brand of macaroon that helped. Anyone know which brand?

Hello cougarvet,
It was Archway macaroons. It's the coconut in the macaroons that seems to help some people with their diarrhea symptoms. So, that said, you could try eating flaked, unsweetened, coconut and see if that helps her. The sugar in the cookies can, in itself, throw off some IBDers.
There are many other treatment options these days for Crohn's other than sulfa-based antibiotics. She should consult with her GI about other options for treatment.
Cheers,
Elizabeth
If you have a health food store or a Whole Foods type store near your/her home you could look there and see if you can find a macaroon that is all natural without preservatives. Or, you could make your own, they're one of the easier cookies to make. Preservatives can be a killer on the gut so that's why I'm recommending a natural variety/approach.
Best of luck,
Elizabeth
Actually you can still get Archway coconut macaroons. My mother has been dealing with diverticulitis for the past 10 days, terrible pain, etc. Last night I started her on the cookies although she did not want anything. She ate them and for the first time in 10 days I didnot get a middle of the night phone call with her crying (literally) about how bad she was hurting. Today she is doing even better. Was out of bed (gasp!) and walking around a bit. Grant it, she is 78 and doesn't do much, but due to the diverticulitis she wasnt doing anything at all. I really think the cookies are helping.
It's not the macaroons!--your body is not suffering from a macaroon deficiency--it's the coconut. In my own experience, IBS is really lessened if candida, which proliferates when good bacteria are eliminated from the GI tract by antibiotics and other environmental insults, is eliminated. Coconut oil (organic please), as it turns out, is one of the best antifungals that does not also kill your good bacteria. One tablespoon a day for several weeks does it, but be prepared for the die-off symptoms which feel somewhat like the flu Also, I've found out that soy is extremely irritating to my gut. Once I eliminated soy and candida, I stopped experiencing IBS. It would be great if doctors actually knew anything at all about this condition.
I disagree. The gut is seriously compromised by candida, and its symptoms are the same whether it's IBS or IBD--bloating, constipation, diarrhea, pain in the hips etc. Once the gut is impaired, it is always much more susceptible to candida, which has, oddly enough, the same symptoms as IBD. Most mds don't even recognize candida as a problem; they'd rather give you drugs that, in turn, cause other serious problems. And what? Macaroons help IBD (who knows why) but it's the coconut that deals with IBS and candida?? C'mon...
Your mom might be too old for this, but for you...Squat when you poo, as opposed to sitting down. I personally CURED my Crohns completely in less than 2 months! Go to naturesplatform.com and do some research. Oh and ANY other gastro conditions (hemmeroids, IBS, colon cancer, prostate cancer, diverticulitis, etc) will be cured as well. Two-thirds of the world squats, but not Western Society, where we give you meds to ease the symptoms and take your money.

Do you want to be healthy again? I'm only passing this along because it changed my life and I know the pain of Crohn's. Please squat now and don't wait for the breaking down of your system.

Thank you. I guess Archway is out of business and no other brand compares. We will give the coconut a try.
