Sunday, November 30, 2008 KAREN asks

Q: I HAVE PAIN IN UPPER RIGHT STOMACH, WHAT CAN THIS BE?

I STARTED HURTING IN MY LEFT PART OF MY STOMACH FIRST AND WAS SICK.  I THOUGHT I HAD A VIRUS.  IT FINALLY WENT AWAY BUT THEN A WEEK LATER I STARTED HURTING ON MY RIGHT SIDE. IT STARTED KIND OF IN BETWEEN MY BACK AND RIGHT SIDE. IT HURTS ALOT ON MY RIGHT TOP SIDE UNDER MY BREAST. I AM SICK WITH IT AND MY WHOLE STOMACH FEELS LIKE I AM FULL AND LIKE IT IS ON FIRE.  I HAD GALLBLADDER SURGERY BACK IN 99. THEY SAID THEY TOOK IT OUT. IT FEELS ALOT LIKE THAT DID WHEN I HAD GALLSTONES.  AFTER I HAD MY SURGERY MY STOMACH HAS NOT BEEN RIGHT SINCE.  I HAVE TO BE CAREFUL OF WHAT I EAT.  I HAVE UPSET STOMACH ALOT.  CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF YOU HAVE HAD ANYTHING LIKE THIS? I WOULD BE GRATEFUL.

Good morning, Karen. Thank you for posting, though I'm sorry you've been feeling poorly lately.

This forum is dedicated to information and issues related to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)--Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Your question didn't mention whether or not you've ever been diagnosed with either CD or UC, nor do your complaints seem to support a suspicion of IBD.

Your liver is located in the region you describe ("I STARTED HURTING ON MY RIGHT SIDE. IT STARTED KIND OF IN BETWEEN MY BACK AND RIGHT SIDE. IT HURTS ALOT ON MY RIGHT TOP SIDE UNDER MY BREAST").

I suggest that you discuss your complaints with your doctor. He/she will probably want to do a complete blood count (CBC) and comprehensive metabolic profile (CMP) to start. He may also send you for an ultrasound study of your liver and pancreas.

You may also want to check out our Recurring Abdominal Pain page:

Good luck.
