Q: what is causing my left sided pain woman with crohn's disease.

I have had crohn's disease for 8 years. I had my large bowel removed approximately 9 years ago and have had frequent abdominal surgery for small bowel obstruction, appendicitis, hysterectomy, intersusuption, adhesion devision etc etc. I now have left sided abdo pain, pressure and a feeling as though something is grwing inside. The pain is worse in the morning up till lunch time and then subsides a little, it then reappears in the evening. The pain feels dull and achey and is constant. I often feel pain in front of thigh and through to my back. I describe the pain as grating as if there is rubbing or irratation. It can be mils to severe nothing I do makes it better and food seems to make it worse. I eat a healthy diet and have constant diahorrea. At present I have lost 5 lbs in a week however my weight has been stable since last op in June 2006. What is going on.

You do have a complicated history, Karen. I'm sorry you've been through so much.

I'm not sure why you had the colectomy prior to the diagnosis of Crohn's disease, but in any case, your current left-sided pain could be related to any number of things at this point. Certainly, with your surgical history, together with your history of IBD, adhesions,  scar tissue, or other stricturing readily come to mind.

Have you reported the "constant" diarrhea, and amount of weight loss to your doctor? Even if it turns out that you don't have a surgical problem, and the diarrhea is related to, say, wheat sensitivity, or lactose intolerance (one or both are possibilities), the amount of weight loss that you are talking about, in such a short period of time, is concerning.

Please contact your doctor today, if you haven't already done so.
