Chewing gum sweetener can cause dangerous weight loss

Doctors are warning patients with inflammatory bowel disease to curb their intake of sugar-free chewing gum. The warning comes after two British patients experienced chronic diarrhea and dangerous weight loss. Eventually, doctors discovered that both patients were chewing upward of 18 sticks of sugar-free gum per day. The problem, experts say, is that sugar-free gum contains a sweetener called sorbitol, which is a laxative. Read more »
