Antibiotic Xifaxan gives prolonged relief from IBS

Researchers report that the antibiotic Xifaxan (rifaximin) provides long-term relief from the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Xifaxan, already approved to treat "traveler's diarrhea," appears to work by targeting bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, which some researchers believe may be the root cause of IBS. Patients in the study who were treated with a 10-day course of the antibiotic continued to show improvement more than 10 weeks later. Read more »
