A reader wants to know why celiac disease is often misdiagnosed as
irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and what tests can distinguish
between the two. Dr. Nicholas Costrini says that many people are
misdiagnosed because the symptoms of celiac disease--such as
bloating, milk intolerance, and diarrhea--are similar to IBS
symptoms. Patients who believe they may have celiac disease should
talk to their doctor about getting blood tests or an intestinal
biopsy.
