Pulling the painkillers Vioxx and Bextra off the market may have spared patients' hearts at the expense of harming their stomachs, experts say. Rates of stomach problems serious enough to require hospitalization have risen significantly since these COX-2 inhibitor meds were taken off the market, new research suggests. Experts say the heart gains patients achieved by not taking these COX-2s may be outweighed by their risk for serious gastrointestinal events.
