Researchers say there is another good reason to stop smoking--Crohn's patients who smoke may be more likely to need surgery. In a recent study, scientists found that patients who smoke are more likely to have damage to the small intestine rather than the colon. Small intestine damage tends to be more severe than colon damage, and it is often treated by surgery.
