DETROIT (Reuters) - Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm underwent emergency surgery to treat a bowel obstruction and was recuperating on Wednesday, her office said.
The Democratic governor was operated on Tuesday night for the problem, believed to be related to a 15-year-old injury from a car accident, said Granholm spokeswoman Liz Boyd.
"Physicians indicate that her prognosis is good and she is resting comfortably," Boyd said in a statement.
Boyd said Granholm's doctor had recommended the surgery after symptoms began to appear in the past two days.
Granholm, a supporter of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, had attempted to broker a deal that would have allowed the state to rerun its presidential primary.
Democratic primaries in Michigan and Florida in January were invalidated by the national party because both states disobeyed party directives and held their balloting earlier than allowed.
Clinton won Michigan's January 15 primary, although Barack Obama removed his name from the ballot and neither candidate actively campaigned in the state.
On Sunday, Granholm had attended a fund-raising dinner in Detroit where the keynote speaker was Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
Granholm canceled a planned trip to Israel and Kuwait where she was to have met with potential investors, Boyd said.
