Anemia may help, not hurt, the body

Anemia is traditionally seen as a health problem that should be addressed, but a new study suggests anemia may help heal the body. Canadian researchers looked at medical research on drugs such a Procrit, Epogen, and Aranesp and found that efforts to treat anemia often made the underlying disease worse. The problem, researchers suggest, is that anemia may be the body's way of conserving energy and preventing the spread of unhealthy bacteria, since bacteria does not grow well in anemic blood.  Read full story >
