'Virtual colonoscopies' effective, study finds

Researchers in Italy have found that a type of colonoscopy that uses high-powered X-rays detects tumors and precancerous growths as well as standard colonoscopies. These "virtual" colonoscopies, which are done using computed tomography scans, may offer an alternative for people who are too embarrassed or nervous about having a standard colonoscopy that involves having a camera threaded through the colon. The new study also adds to the growing body of evidence that CT scans are as effective as invasive colonoscopy procedures.
