Low vitamin D may harm IBD patients' bones

Canadian scientists have found a link between inadequate levels of vitamin D and low bone mineral density in people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Doctors have long known of a higher incidence of osteoporosis and fractures in patients with IBD, but the role of vitamin D levels in IBD-related bone disease was not known. Researchers say their finding suggests that maintaining adequate levels of the vitamin may help protect IBD patients from bone loss and its related complications.  Read full story >
