Canadian scientists have found a link between inadequate levels of vitamin D and low bone mineral density in people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Doctors have long known of a higher incidence of osteoporosis and fractures in patients with IBD, but the role of vitamin D levels in IBD-related bone disease was not known. Researchers say their finding suggests that maintaining adequate levels of the vitamin may help protect IBD patients from bone loss and its related complications.
