One bout of a diarrheal disease caused by stomach bugs Salmonella or Campylobacter may triple a person's risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease up to 15 years after infection, researchers say. A study of 13,148 patients with documented gastroenteritis found that the risk was greatest in the year following infection. They also found that patients who had been hospitalized in the days before or after their bout with the stomach bugs were five times more likely to develop Crohn's or colitis later.
