People who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may get help from consuming soluble fiber (psyllium), but not bran, experts say. In a recent study, researchers found that patients taking psyllium had a 90-point drop in symptom severity, on average. Patients who attempted to increase their fiber intake by eating bran-containing foods experienced a 58-point drop, and those who took a placebo had a 49-point drop. Researchers say that many patients who took bran had the highest dropout rate, likely due to an increase in symptoms.
