French researchers say that drugs for inflammatory bowel disease may increase the risk of infection-related cancers. In a study of 19,000 IBD patients, scientists found that those on thiopurines such as Imuran had a more than five-fold increased risk of developing lymphoma compared to those who had never taken a thiopurine. But researchers point out that the overall risk for developing the cancer was still low, and they suggest that the benefits of the drug may outweigh the risks for IBD sufferers.
