British researchers say that gene defects that allow a "leaky gut" may be behind ulcerative colitis (UC). The study of 12,700 people found four genes in particular--LAMB1, CDH1, CDH3 and HNF4A--that keep the lining of the intestine working. When the lining doesn't work, gut bacteria leaks into the intestine lining and causes chronic inflammation. Researchers believe this is one of the causes of UC.
