Gene discovery sheds light on inherited Crohn's, colitis

A study of 9 children who have inherited a severe form of early-onset colitis may help unlock secrets to IBD. Researchers found mutations of two genes that negatively affect the protein interleukin-10. Other studies have identified this link as well, but experts say the difference is that this study suggests a subset of adult IBD patients could be treated with bone marrow transplants that may ease the disease symptoms. One child treated with a bone marrow transplant was cured of colitis, and researchers hope the treatment will prove useful for some adult IBD patients who have the interleukin-10 variant.  Read full story >
