I believe what your question is referring to is semen not sperm (which are tiny cells in ejaculated semen in actively reproductive men). Yes, it is possible for brownish-colored semen to indicate a possible prostate problem. See:

I know that you asked for suggestions other than "see a doctor", but I can't help myself from agreeing with Maria that if he is afraid of a prostate problem, it's really important that he get some medical assistance. People have all kinds of reasons for not wanting to go to a doctor, but the two most common I hear are embarassment and finances. While it can be embarrassing, keep in mind that the prostate, penis, bladder, etc are all parts of our bodies - just because our culture has attached an "ick" factor to some of these things, doesn't change the fact that it's still a part of our basic anatomy. Just like we see a doctor when our arm is broken or our heart feels strange, it's also important that we see a doctor when a part of our urology isn't working correctly. And trust me ... the doctor has seen it all before, so you won't make him or her blush!

As for the finances, as someone who went without insurance for several years, I understand first-hand the difficulty of choosing food or medical care. However, prostate problems (as with most serious health challenges) can become serious, and if neglected can end up costing far more in the end.
