Hello and thank you for writing.

Good to hear of your success with Botox treatment for your incontinence. It sounds like you've had favorable results and that your UI/SI symptoms have decreased.

For others reading this who aren't familiar with Botox as a treatment for incontinence, here's a bit of background information from our Incontinence Treatment/Medications section:

Botulinum (Botox). Botulinum, the deadly toxin that sometimes contaminates improperly cooked foods, is also a powerful muscle-relaxant. Tiny injected amounts of a purified form (Botox) can relax the muscles and may help control overactive bladder that causes urge incontinence. It may also help relieve urinary retention that might occur after incontinence surgeries.

Botox and Urge Incontinence. An experimental therapy involves injecting botulinum toxin (Botox) into the bladder muscle to help stop the involuntary contracts that lead to urge incontinence. Early study results suggest this is a promising treatment option for those who do not respond to other therapies.

My husband had a radical prostatectomy in 1998 and has been experiencing incontinence to some degree ever since.  He had surgery to implant a male sling in hopes of a solution but it made his incontinence worse and had to have it removed.  Ever since this unsucessful procedure his incontinence has been severe causing him to have no control at all.  His quality of life is totally diminished and we need to know if Botox injections should be considered since two doctors have told him that the lining of his bladder is "cooked" from the radiation he had when his cancer reoccured 2 years after his prostatectomy.  He is experiencing passing blood clots that have blocked his uretha tube causing 2 trips to the ER. and blood in his urine.  We would appreciate it so very much if Botox injections should be considered before he commits to having a permanent catheder inserted.  PLEASE respond to this request asap as we have to  make a decision and he has a lot of trepidation. Thank you,  June McGlohn  My email is junealmc@verizon.net

I can only give you my experience. I had a TURP done to remove infected tissue and it left me with both SI and UI. The botox addresses the UI, but not the SI. In my case I get uncontrollable spasms, i.e., my bladder contracts on it's own. You can guess what happens. The botox reduces this considerably. I got my first treatment last July and it has about worn off, so my doctor is working on another request from my insurance company. If you husband just has severe leakage (that the sling should have help) but no spasms, then I don't know if botox would help. Also, if the lining of his bladder is in question, might want to make sure it is healed up before considering this. It might be contributing to it. ~Pete

BTW, I have one more comment. I'm glad you are helping your husband with this. I'm married too, but as far as my wife is concerned the leaking, wet clothing and pads are my problem. She would NEVER consider getting on a public web site like this and ask for help.

I "salute" you for trying to help with this problem. I'm sure he appreciates it! I know I would!~Pete
