Tuesday, September 09, 2008 at 09:49 PMBotox paralyzes part of the detrusor muscle in the bladder. The detrusor is responsible for the contraction of the bladder to force urine out during voiding.
Sometimes the bladder will stop working completely for a short period of time after the Botox is injected. This means it will have to be drained manually using a catheter.
There are two choices, either a Foley (indwelling) catheter, or intermittant catheterization. The Foley is more convenient, as it stays in until it is not needed.
I have had to have a Foley for up to three weeks, followed by a few more weeks of intermittant catheterization. It's uncomfortable, but, as I've stated many times before, it's a small price to pay for months of being dry. Hope this helps.
