bedwetting

By Lynnie Thursday, September 11, 2008

I have always been a bedwetter, now 58 yrs old. My mom got upset with me during my childhood. Sometimes I may go several weeks without any accidents, then boom all of sudden I will wet the bed for several nights. I don't sleep much, always trying not to wet the bed. When it does happen I'm usually having a dream about using the bathroom, does anyone else have these dreams.? I will wake up right after or during the wetting. My husband doesn't say much but I know it upsets him. Wish I could stop.

I gather from your short story that you do not wear protection at night. If this is the case, Why? Wearing diapers would 1.) let you forget about wetting the bed because you will not wet the bed. 2.) let your husband/partner get a good night sleep also! 3.) save changing/washing sheets, blankets, clothing. 4.) save the mattress. 5.) elliminate odor. and 6.) give you peace of mind at home and when away by your knowing you will wake up in a dry bed 98% of the time. Sounds almost too good to be true, but it is. The "stigma" of wearing diapers is small compared to what you have had to put up with all these years. Think back and imagine if your bed wetting had been eliminated by wearing protection. Reduced to throwing out a wet diaper or rinsing it out in the shower each morning and tossing it in the laundry. (disposable/cloth) It is ammazing that such a simple and easy solution is so hard for many to accept.  Good luck, Papa

Guess I don't have a good answer to your question, I need to wear protection but can't get myself to buy anything. I have this voice telling me that I don't need anything, silly I know. You make alot of sense and I will start wearing a diaper, that is the first time I have been able to say that!!

Thanks for the input.

Hi Lynnie

I have had the same type of dream as you.I dreamed once that I was in the bathroom and I could not stop urinating,I woke in a soaked bed.

In another dream I am in a hot tub that is too cold,I turn the temp up and the tub gets warm, once again,I wake in a wet bed.

I am wearing diapers to bed now because I do not wake up to get to the bathroom.I also have daytime accidents from time to time.

 You are not alone.

Lynnie,

I, too, have times when I am dreaming that I am standing over a urinal or sitting on a toilet and suddenly I wake up and I am wetting or have just wet the bed. I also have times when I wash my hands and as the water is streaming over my hands, I suddenly just start wetting. I am 55 years old and am not sure whether to talk to the doctor about it. I really don't want to take medication. I have started wearing a disposable diaper and plastic pants at night, so I don't get the bed wet. My wife is very understanding, but wants me to go to the doctor. I would just prefer to wear a diaper to bed and not take medication. So, I share your situation.

For Lynnie and all those that responded, the first two things that come up that would cause intermittent bedwetting, are certain foods or beverages that are reacting with your system. The second is the possibility of a sleep disorder. As a guy with OSA (obstructive sleep apnea), I'm particularly attentive to things like this. I do not, nor have I ever had a problem with enuresis, that may be in part due to the fact that I only have one working kidney. While many people with OSA tend to have problems with obesity (a common association with OSA) it's not a given. So far as lifestyle issues (food, drink, etc.) taking some time to keep a log may give you clues to a pattern. This may take a fair bit of time (weeks to months) and you need to be fairly diligent about recording the info from day to day. What to record: What you had to eat and drink the night before, approximate volumes of both, the time you went to bed, any medications that you do not take on a daily basis, meal time in relation to bedtime, and whether you were wet or dry in the morning. In some cases, it might be easier to note changes such as something that is new or you have rarely rather than everything. Again you are looking for a pattern of anything in common with the nights that you are wetting the bed. For more info on sleep disorders and what to look for to indicate that you may have a problem is "talkaboutsleep.com".

Hello!

I am new here and I am just stumbelling around. Well, I am 60 y/o male from Sweden with problems a bit simular to yours. My bedwetting accedents stopped at 10 y/o but in summertime my grandmother kept me in diapers up to around 13.

After that all was nice untill 45.

I started to have dreams about going to the bathroom and my bedweting began again. I even sometimes started to wet myself at daytime from time to time but since a year there are only bedwetting, but still the same dream, me going to the bathroom..... As I am sleeping with diapers I do not feel anything about it.  It comes and goes in periods of different lengths. The reason for it has newer been sorted out. Perhaps it goes in generations? My mother was also wetting at night.

Even if I do not wet at dayfime since a year, I am having a pad att daytime. If I do not, I have a panic felling.

I am, sometimes, thinking about if there are some connection between the dream, the panic feeling, my bedwetting as a child and my mothers problems?

And the fact that my grandmoter diapered me at the evenings in summer time whithout any need for it? I remember me thinking "Do not panic".

Hope this might be some input for you!

Tace care!

I am 48 yrs old and have the same exact problem you have. I'll go for long periods without any accidents then boom and it's always occurs while I'm dreaming about going to the bathroom or actually using it. I've tried hypnosis and it seemed to work at times but when you stop it re occurs. Know I use the botox injections in the bladder which gives me more relieve than all the drugs I've ever taken. I get some sleep!

i think its hard for all us at times, no one wants to say there wearing diapers am in my 50s now . its very hard to admit

Thank you Annie. You are right, no one wants to have to mention they are wearing diapers however it is becoming more and more a common or necessary thing. Fortunately my son has always worn diapers and plastic panties to bed so it a lot easier for he and I. My sister has two kids still in diapers at night also for bedwetting and that makes it a lot easier when he stays with them.
