pessary usage

By ulla Friday, November 30, 2007
I would like to hear from anyone that is or has used a pessary and their experience.  Was the pessary successful for day trips?  Is the pessary easy to use?

I just wrote what you wrote but in another newsletter. My ob surgeon told me that most women my age (63) prefer surgery. He said that 90 year old women chose the pessary. Well, I found out from the nurse that it wasn't true. She was very helpful. She gave me some practical advice that has been very helpful.

The pessary is a pain to use, but it does help with my problem which is that my bladder has collapsed into my uterus. I think they are both trying to escape old age. The pessary keeps everything up where it should be. I put a hole along the ring so I would have something to catch on to when extracting it. My nurse also told me to use the estrogen cream with it as a lubricant. There are women who go into the office to have theirs removed. (And I suppose re-inserted after cleaning.) Others put a string threw the hole to help them pull it out. I would recommend it instead of surgery. It's like anything new-practice and wear it.

thank you for your reply.  I am also 61  years old and have not retired from work as yet.  I do miss back backing which I don't do anymore due to my stress incontinence.  I will consider  the vaginal tape perform when I retire but at this time I have heard more negative than positive, so I continue to wait for something, but I am not sure what - better procedures?  I will go see my doctor about having the pessary insert so that I can at least back pack.  I didn't know that it was left inside the vagina and that you could urinate with the pessary in tack.

Interesting and thank you again for writing.  It is good to share.

Now I'm glad I wrote. My only thing to advise is to use it for more that a week. My nurse said I can leave it in for several days at a time. Oh, and the string she recommended was floss to put threw the hole that I cut into the edge of mine to help me have something to hook my finger onto when I pull it out. You would insert the ring with the string tied on it hanging down.

Just don't give up. If you hit a problem that just won't go away, call the doctor. I'm sure they have heard more than I'd want to hear about. Good Luck! Have fun while back packing!
