Bladder urgency and over active bladder (get informed)

By colleen Sunday, August 12, 2007

I stated having urine problems this year July 11,2007. I went to the family doctor and they precribed medicines like Dextrol LA and another one.No medicine seems to help so they refered me to a euroglist asap. The first time the eurolgist saw me he knew my uretha tube had grown very tight almost closed. So that day he did the procedure where they dialate your eurtha. (very  uncomfortable and will need the rest of the night to relax i also got a low grade fever ) which nobody explained to me at the time. So when i got home i had cramps, low grade fever, discharge and pain. Then went for further testing the next week,  had dynamics test done and scope. These both caused irritation and my over active bladder to really act up. I called the doctor 3 times and finally they gave me Prosed ds ( like uristate) Thank god that really helped to releive some pressure.  These medications were very helpful. They made the urge to go to the bathroom less and calmed some things down.  So always ask if there is medication you can take during the testing period to help releive some of the spams and pain. I wish i would have know earlier. Anyway after 4 weeks of having to go the bathroom all the time and nothing coming out The doctor  finally diagnoised me with tight or pinched uretha and over active bladder. The same thing we knew in the beggining so i stated flomax on friday and was flat on my back by friday night til Sunday. Then i called the doctor and explained my systoms, blurred vision, headache, fainting, dizziness etc. I already have very low blood pressure and flomax makes you blood pressure even lower. I was very frustrated and bedridden for days until the flomax got out of my system..moral to the story be sure your doctor knows your conditions of you medical past (low blood pressure etc.) before prescribing any medication.

I just trusted the doctor and ask no questions. I was very miserable and still am. There was and is no quick fix in place for the bladder problem so be prepared to ask questions and get informed about the medication they want to put you on it may make a difference in your life. So i am back to square one still have bladder urgency all the time and bladder spams which make life very interesting. I have missed several events due to this condtion and would like people to be a little more educated on their sitation. I know there has to be a end in site i just dont see one yet. Hope this helps any women who stuggles with this problem. According to flomax it is supposed to be for men only anyway. VERY FRUSTING !!!

Hello, Colleen. Thank you for writing. The experience you've shared is valuable.

You've certainly been through a trying time since your urinary problems started last month.

See the information at the link below on a recent study that found a skin patch that dispenses the bladder-calming drug oxybutynin to be helpful for people with overactive bladder:

Regarding the narrowing or closure of your uretha (urethral stricture), I've referred what you've shared to our physician expert, Dr. Jennifer Sobol, who is a urologic surgeon and who will best be able to comment on this. She will likely respond to you soon with more detailed information.

Let me know if I can help you further. Keep us posted on our progress, and good luck.

Best to you,

Maria

Hi Colleen:

It saddens me to hear how challenging this journey has been for you, only to feel that you're back at square one! People do often have a challenging time with medications for a variety of reasons. There are many overactive bladder medications on the market, so you may find success with another, but obviously that is something that your doctor can help you sort out.

Thanking you for alerting others that the best medical advocate out there is yourself. Especially women in our society are taught not to "go to bat" for themselves, but when dealing with a medical challenge it's an absolute must, and for many it's a hard lesson to learn. Good luck!
