In the news this week is a report on problems with the mesh sling surgery used to treat pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence. Apparently there have been about 1,000 reports of problems with the mesh sling, including pain, recurrence of the original problem, and infection.

I checked with the Dr. performing my mesh sling to check out this Dr's history and schooling and it seemed fine, but I did not ask the Dr. how many of these procedures that he had done. After the fact, I found out that he had only done 19 before and I was unlucky 20. He inserted the left side of my sling into my bladder and did not realize it. That was Nov. of 2008 and 4 surgeries later and I am worst off than before. Before the first surgery I only had incontience only when I sneezed, coughed, or lifted heavy objects. I just had to have my urethra reconstructed because of erosion and now I leak just when I walk. I am worst off now than before. I have been talking with other women who have had slings done and most of them have had to have more that one surgery because the sling did not work correctly. I am finding out that the surgeries done successfully the first time were done by Urologist and the majority of the ones that had to have multiple surgeries were done by gynocologist. The first Dr. that made the error on my sling was a gyno. I have a great Dr. who is doing his best to correct my situation is an Urologist, makes more sense since that is there field of work. Would you like a Dermatologist giving you hysterectomy?????????? Seems like the Gyno's want to make a little extra money since they tell you the procedure is so simple and convince you that. I wish that I could have taken back the last year and I could have lived with the problem I have now. I have to wait at least 8 months to try to have something done to correct this. Surgery #5, what a mess and it has changed my life and the life of my husband. I also leak when we have sex, so our sex life is 0.
