Scientists at the University of New York are studying special cells that line the bladder in hopes of being able to engineer new bladders and restore continence in people with serious bladder conditions, including those with bladder cancer.

This new bio-engineering technology could allow those who've lost their bladder function or had all or part of their bladders removed to regain continence.

Researchers predict that regenerating certain bladder cells, those that enable the bladder to retain urine, could produce usable bladder tissue for transplantation into people who need bladder replacement.
