When Someone You Love Has Incontinence

By Jennifer Sobol, D.O., Health Pro Friday, January 04, 2008
Up until now, when discussing the social aspects of incontinence, I have addressed how to talk about your incontinence with your family and friends. But what do you do when a loved one has incontinence?  I hate to be crass, but we all know people who smell like urine, and at one time or another,...

Your post reminded me of a friend I ahd in Jr. High.We became friends at the start of the year, he was new in town.Nice kid, but I noticed I was his only friend.I did notice a odor whenever I was with him.

A couple of months went by untill I realized he smelled of urine.I was never invited to his house, he always came to mine.

I never understood why he smelled like that, then one day my mother told me he wore diapers to bed because he wet the bed.Turns out she noticed and questioned his mother.

I guess he did not bathe every morning he wet his diaper.

He moved away shortly after thatand I never saw him again.

Hope you are happy Peter, wherever you may be.

Hello,my daughter was eleven years old when her problems began. She would hide her underpants and cry when I asked if she was ok. I took her right away to a urologist at Childrens Hospital in Boston and he

said she has red blood cells in her urine, started her right away on Detrol after a cystectomy and since then it's been great. Bottom line, thank goodness she never has to smell of urine.

OMG - I hope this hasnt happened with me!!  My 90 year old mother is not at all incontinent, but it has been creeping on with me for years and has now become A PROBLEM.........I wear the usual tenalady pads without which I dont know what I would do at all.   I always think that I am ok with these as they are meant to protect from the smell of urine.  Mostly I change them and can manage but sometimes if I am out for a long time, there is simply nothing I can do and I just am so thankful that I have these, I simply cant hold the urine in and have to 'go' in the pad.  If this does happen, which isnt that often as I take charge and am careful, I hope I dont stink of urine as well....OH!!

Thank you for sharing this with us. I work for a medical supply company and I hear stories like yours everyday. Most people are ashamed or humilated when they contact us, but we have a live chat, so they don't have to speak to us face to face and this makes them feel alot better.

We also have an incontinence support group online where you can share tips with others dealing with incontinence. I am not sure if it's ok to post the website here, but you may delete it if you wish -dependonbriefs.com/incontinence-forum is the link to it.

Again, thank you for sharing with us. I know alot of people who deal with incontinence appreciates you sharing this with us.
