I Had Surgery for Stress Incontinence and Now I Have Urge Incontinence! What Happened?

By Jennifer Sobol, D.O., Health Pro Friday, February 08, 2008
There are multiple types of incontinence, and I have discussed them on my SharePost blog previously. What happens when you have been diagnosed with stress incontinence and have undergone surgery and you are still wet? Stress incontinence is traditionally the type of incontinence where one loses ...

This was probably the only thing that was left out prior to my surgery. I had the sling surgery December 26th and a week later was leaking more than I did prior to surgery. Of course, after speaking with my doctor, this was very normal. I just wish I knew before. I could have saved myself a couple days of frustration. For a week I was depressed because I thought that the surgery was unsuccessful. Now, I'm 6 weeks post-op and I'm on daily meds that have made a huge difference. Plus, I'm sure my bladder is re-training itself to hold the urine longer. My problem was that I was used to leaking little bits at a time. After surgery, I was leaking whole bladders. Prior to surgery, however, I couldn't run, sneeze, cough, laugh or even get out of the shower without worry of leaking. Now, I leak maybe once every 10 days and that's usually my own fault. Too much soda or coffee or I just don't take the time (3 small kids). My surgery was to fix my opening that wouldn't close. Now it's closed and I've had a serious cold and cough for three weeks. No leaking when I cough, sneeze or blow my nose. I'm so happy that I did it. And the daily meds are worth the hassle. I'm terrible at remembering to take them. I just wish someone would have mentioned all this before. I was so nervous about whether or not it was going to be a successful surgery considering how much I was leaking prior to the surgery. Now I'm pad-free most of the time. I feel naked after 5 years of heavy pads! It's so great and encourage anyone considering it to go ahead. It was barely painful...I took one pain pill the day of the surgery and that was it. And for those that have the urge incontinence...be patient. It does get better!

It is not unusual for men to develop at least some form of SI after a TURP, which I've had done. Unfortunately for me, I also developed UI. My urologist told me this seems to happen to about 10-15% of TURP patients, and no one know why, or who might be at risk. Shame no one told me about before hand. I was told there might be a temporary SI problem, not about the potential for UI. As my TURP was for infection and not for BPH or cancer, I might have weighed the risks before proceeding. Too late now, I guess!

I wish I knew about this before, my doctor never told me this could happen.  I had surgery in April 08, he put the sling too tight and I couldn't urinate at all after the surgery I had to be catherized for 6 weeks.  He said I had to heal from the first surgery before he could go in and cut the strap.  A second surgery 6 more weeks later to put another strap.   This one worked for the Stress incontinence but I now have de novo urge urinary incontinence.  Its so frustrating for me, I was told this would probably correct itself and that my body needed 12 weeks to heal from the surgeries.  Its now been 9 months and I have urge incontinence worse than ever.  Today I wet myself on the way to work, not just a little leakage but total soak through and had to turn around and go home.  Is there really anything else they can do to fix this?  I am only 50. I don't want to be in diapers for the rest of my life

All carbonated soft drinks such as Dr. Pepper, Coke, Pepsi, and the uncaffeinated ones are terrible for your bladder (and a  host of other body issues). Yes, they do contribute to cancer and, especially, diabetes.  Period.  Anyone with a bladder issue of any sort should avoid drinking soda and if, like me, caffeine may be a trigger also, you'd do well to avoid soda/pop as much as possible. I love a Coke once in a while and drink Vernors ginger ale on the rare occasion I get the flu; I long since gave up soda and especially 'diet' soda...the proven damaging effects are just too well documented to not use extreme caution.

Stress Incontinence is a serious issue.  When I got around 40 years old I started having incontinence problems.  I thought that I had a UTI, but when my doctor tested I did not have UTI.  He then explained to me that I had stress incontinence & a couple steps to help it. So make sure you see your doctor.

I just had TVT-O surgery 4 days ago and have noticed I still have leakage.  I expected to notice a huge difference immediately but as I've been reading on this site, immediate relief is not so???  Does anyone know when I might see improvement if the surgery was successful??

Thanks..

Yup, that would be me. I had the TOT procedure done three years ago and it worked total wonders...no more stress incontinence at all. However about a year following the surgery I began to expereince urge incontinence and sometimes to a severe degree, as in total change of clothing. I have finally established that in my case it is directly the result of drinking coffee. If I do not drink coffee, I do not have urge incontinence even if I drink an excess of other liquids. So, whether it is caffeine or some other component of coffee, that is definitely my trigger.  Knowing that now, I can do one or both of these:

1. Abstain from coffee when away from home.

2. Prepare for the possibility and wear protection.
