I have just read these posts because i have just been advised that this could be the best treatment for me. They are very encouraging as i am scared. I asked the consultant about weight issues and he replied that stress incontinence is much higher in overweight people. what i meant to ask him, but forgot, is should i try loosing this weight before any op...it might take a while.. or forever, so if i go ahead with the op and then loose sustantial weight what happens to the mesh. As this op if a life style one and not life threatening it is only quality of life that is affected if i postponed it until i'd tried loosing wieght....howevre i would be easier to have the op first and then i could be more active to help me loose it>
Any comments helpful.
Thank you.

Hi,
I had a TVT done about four years ago, and since then have had the tape eroding into the vaginal wall three times. I had it fixed each time, but it just seems to recur. Now it has come through again, and is getting worse the longer I leave it. What other options do I have for resolving this problem? Should I change doctors, and see if another one does a better job? All that he has done each time is restitch part of the vaginal wall over the mesh, and obviously this does not work. Within weeks of the op, the mesh comes through again. I work in the Middle east and actually have to wait almost a full year before I am able to return home to have the problem seen to, as I only have medical cover in my country of origin.
I am now planning on falling pregnant (second time round),and am worried that the mesh and the whole TVT will affect conception and then the actual pregnancy. I know that I will have to have a ceasarean.
I had a TVT Gynecare bladder lift some years ago, in 2004. 18 months later I started with vaginal infections which would come and go. I did'nt connect it to the TVT and would be going to my G.P. who used to dismiss it all, it would go away and I would get on with my life but then it would come back, like a bad case of thrush. No one I went to see could tell me what it was or knew anyone who would get as sore as me. Each year this condition got worse until now this year I can't sit down at all and I am housebound. After starting to use the internet in May I now know I have tape erousion. After informing my G.P of my condition they told me they had never heard of it and told me to find myself a gynecolegist. I am frightened and desperate, I have in the past seen a few gynecolegists in my area but they didnt know what was wrong, one of them even told me alot of women my age can't wear underwear or sit down, just get on with it, this I might add was a private consultation at my expense. I would like to be in contact with other U.K. members and find out where to go to get this out of me. I don't care if I have to go to U.S.A. for treatment, but I cant go on like this.
Please help me.
Hi, I had my TVT surgery in 2002. From the 1st day I have had problems, not being able to void in a normal sitting position still to this day. My gyno tried to loosen the tape but that did'nt work so he told me I could either have it removed or try and wait awhile to see if it would loosen some due to my other organs dropping with the aging process. Well since I just had the surgery done I opted to take it year by year and just see how that would work out. It was not the right decision. It should have been removed immediately to avoid all the problems I have had to endure since the surgery. Chronic bladder infections that have only increased with time until this year which have been one infection about every 2 to 3 weeks. I was referred to a Uro and was tested for many things with no answers. I even had a Cystoscopy which is a camera that is inserted into the uretha and into the bladder to see if there are any visible problems. Nothing was found at that time. But my problems persisted and getting worse. I even had gone to the hospital a few times and all they said was that I had infection and was treated with antibiotics. I have become resistant from alot of antibiotics because of having to take them so frequently so I have to be changed all the time. I finally went to Mayo Clinic and my Uro there done another cysto and he finally found the cause of the problem. The TVT had eroded into my urethra and he informed me that the part that is eroded will have to be cut out and stiched and that I will be required to wear a cath for 10 days after surgery. I know it sounds bad but I am looking forward to having the surgery and so relieved that someone finally found the root of the problem.. My response to you is to go to Mayo Clinic because they keep going until they find the problem and solution....
Hi Cathy, I've had 2 slings put in to cure a severe case of stress incontinence. The first one didnt work, so my gyno did another. I started feeling like something was poking me and i tried to explan this to my gyno, but i think they thought i was crazy!! Long story short, I ended up in Iowa City seeing a urologist. After a very painful cystoscopy, (almost flew OFF the table!) the urologist discovered both slings have eroded into my urethra. One of them is in there but not too bad, the other is almost closing off my urethra and is very close to the opening of my bladder. They're doing a surgery on May 23rd to try and get them both out. Can you please tell me your experience with this surgery? I cant find much info on it and am thinking about it constantly. Hows the recovery time? How long did you have a catheter? How long will i be off work? (Im an executive secretary) Any info you could give would be much appreciated!! Thank you and I hope you're feeling great!
I had a complete hysterectomy and bladder sling in mid-October of 2010 even though I was not incontinent because of the bladder prolapse this procedure was performed. Right away I wasn't feeling "right" when I sat down. I kept complianing that my tailbone and the entrance of my vagina hurt like I was sitting on glass. I was told that it was because of all the stitches. Two months of suffering and bedrest my gynocologist agreed to take out the stitches because they didn't disolve. Low and behold she couldn't help me with the sling stitches because the sling was actually protruding into my vagina with the stitches intertwined. I had bright red bleeding and went to quickcare and the doctor stated that he couldn't find the "source". It felt like I had a cheese grated inside of me everytime I sat down. Finally I got to see the urologist who placed the sling and he said that my body was rejected the sling. It has only been two months since my surgery and he states that all he can do it take out the sling and there was no other repair he could preform. He states I will probably end up wetting myself. He also stated that in six months after my body heals I could have another put int. I am highly frustrated as I followed all the doctors instructions and had no idea that this was a common problem. With my insurance there is only one doctors office that is approved. Now I have to have another surgery and haven't been able to work for over 2 1/2 months. Has anyone had a removal? Is it better or worse? What is the healing time?
Hello Dr. Sobol,
My name is Kim Gillespie and I'm a PT practicing in women's health. I have a question for you regarding a patient of mine who will is a candidate for TVT. She is 26, athletic, and in the military. She presents with a grade 3 cystocele and rectocele, grade 2 uterocele. I've been working with her to manually lift these organs, strengthen the pelvic floor, and reduce her valsalva and abdominal firing so as to reduce the downward pressure. She has recently been released from performing situps for her physical training which was making her condition worse. I am concerned that once her TVT surgery is performed, she will be put back into her regular physical training regimen (situps and heavy activity) and blow out the lifted structures. Can you give me any advice on how to advise her?
Thank you so much for all your helpful information!
Kim
hI Kim,
I am not a medical person, but i was a fit person doing sit ups etc and i now also have a prolapse. The physiotherapist talked to me at length about exercises but it wasn't until i tries the uterus electodes that i reaqly understood which muscles do what etc. Using the probe i can now do sit ups whilst tightening my pelvic floor and not bearing down. Although the probes and exercises have really tightened things up and made me far more aware of when to protect the pelvic floor by contracting before lifting heavy things, for example,. saddly the remedial effects are not perfect and i am also looking at an operation. I will read the expert reply to your question with interest.
